Guest Speaker: John A. Gaut

John A. Gaut, an EAS Certified Master Beekeeper, has a decades long relationship with honey bees. He managed a dozen hives on his family’s dairy farm in Pennsylvania beginning when he was 9 and all through high school.

John is a graduate of The Pennsylvania State University with an Agricultural Engineering degree and applies engineering principles to beekeeping. As a result, John is a data driven beekeeper and strives to practice precision apiculture. His beekeeping practices minimizes losses while maximizing productivity of honey, queens and bees.

He now has hives in multiple locations in northern New Jersey. Honey from his production hives is sold at a local farm store.  John also raises queens from his own locally adapted stock for other beekeepers in his area.

The Importance of Drones for High Quality Queens

John will share the importance of drones and their specific biology as compared to workers and queens.

Selecting drone production colonies are important for producing high quality queens.

John will share his drone selection criteria and drone rearing methods.

John strives to raise high quality queens mated with high quality drones.
